Day 185: Caterpillar

Green caterpillar, how'd you live inside
The fridge, inside that bag of lettuce, making
Your way into my lunch?  Figures you'd hide
Amid the vegan beef replacement, breaking
Apart the produce and the mayonnaise
Smeared thinly over bread that passed the test --
The mold stopped there, so skip a slice -- then raise
Your maggot face and pray:  I'm green, distressed
And homeless, lord, so take me whole and living
Beyond the backyard door, beyond the crisper
To droughted honeysuckle rows, misgiving-
Abounded, free but lost -- and please, lord, whisper
Some osmeterium compassion to
The sandwich man; you'd help us both pull through.
