Day 53: Designation

A one-hit wonder's effort near his name -
He hears his verse beneath the neon sign
Whose six-foot letters struggle to proclaim
Their purpose. Dead and blinking, with a whine
That halts his line of thought, where he can see
A portion of his designation:  'Q
ED,' the Christian part of QED
1618 oh 3, the overdue,
Imperfect melody arrives.  He's ill-
Equipped to process it: a song that's sung
By people? Singers out of sync? Free will
With space for noise. He's stripped of wire and wrung
From plastic. New, he shapes his robot ear:
Surrounded by the neon lamps; austere.

"Christian" and "free will" add definite religious undertones, a hint of Yeats? and all too fitting for this cheap though heavily orchestrated and painstakingly designed creation that is nonetheless dead. A horrific yet apt description of the modern Christian gospel. La, too intriguing and lending a depth that entices.

He shapes his own ear? Is that why we are so deaf? No. Made more or less blind by Him Who alone can open our eyes.

La, but this marvel unfolding is too fascinating, and becoming more interesting every next step.

Shall I note your excellent use of alliteration, consonance and assonance in each? Or stop here, convinced that having noted it twice suffices for all the rest?

Beautiful. Happily, unlike a serial feature, it is all already posted, hence I must only wait the time it takes to load each page to read further.

The religious undertones crept in early, and carry on throughout as a consequence of the way the latter sonnets follow the Hero's Journey. The android (cyborg? human?) hero is, within that context, nearly a Christ-figure. Although I must admit, the emerged early only as a consequence of my trying to find a way to match a robotic name to a blinking sign, and to be perhaps a tad too cute with "QED" being part of the name. It's all too cute all around, since the rest of the name has purpose too.

Ooooh! You have given me just a bit more of a hint to keep the intrigue dancing just out of reach of my discovery, la!

Come, come. What does his name signify? "QED" was totally beyond me, and I spent hours while working tossing about 1618 oh 3, wondering what it had to do with, some master's birth or death or? Needless to say, I never did find a suitable answer.

Will you dare elucidate?
